A recent article in the NY Times talked about the value of communicating concern to college students.

According to the article, college students who experienced strong engagement with their teachers, e.g., made the student excited about learning or made the student feel like the teacher cared about them as a person—these students were “twice as likely to have a strong sense of well-being and engagement at work” when their college careers were over.

In other words, teachers could make a long-term difference in the quality of life of their students.

What teachers are in a position to do this better than us—instructors of Verbal Defense?

We are truly in a position to make a difference in the lives of the people who take our classes. The key to setting the hook for lifelong inspiration in students? Communicating concern.
