For many people, their only interaction with police is during a negative experience – getting pulled over for example. And with new reports of police violence cropping up across the country it’s easy to see why the public is losing trust in the police.

The key to regaining that trust comes down to improving communication with the public says retired officer Doug Lynch.

Officers need to make themselves more visible and approachable by interacting with citizens whenever possible. Using the Universal Greeting and treating others with dignity by showing respect whether walking the beat or just stopping for lunch helps put a human element back into what many see as a faceless agency that only appears when something bad happens.

Listen to the simple suggestions officer Lynch suggests and think about how you can implement these strategies in your own line of work. Do you agree that better communication would help reestablish trust in the police?
