There are few tools more powerful than empathy.

Being empathetic toward a person means that you mentally place yourself in their situation to get a better understanding of their thoughts, emotions and motivations for their actions.

An incredible example of how empathy can change an interaction comes from a story in Atlanta where a school clerk convinced an armed gunman to surrender to police after barricading himself in the offices of a school.

The way she was able to accomplish this was by being empathetic to the gunman’s situation.

In this news report, you can hear on the 911 recording how Tuff empathized with the gunman.

For those of us who believe in the power of empathy and personal presence, Tuff is a shining example.
